About us

Registered in the year 2022, OLMANYARA TILIL (GREEN GIFT) is working towards empowering communities in the rural areas of the country to be part of the solution towards fighting back desertification. Mr. Kariuki, the executive director has participated in replanting trees in the water catchment areas of Mount Kenya in an attempt to save drying up rivers. After 10 years of this effort, the net effect has been more deforestation as trees are cut at a pace faster than they are replanted. Those planted have a very low survival rate due to factors that must be addressed first for the planting efforts to bear fruits. Trees are cut mostly because of the following reason. Energy; firewood and charcoal are the most common source of cooking energy in the country. Economic activities; with global warming, rain-fed agriculture has become unsustainable and trading in charcoal and firewood remains as the only viable survival activity for those near the forests. Construction. Most of the houses in the rural setting are build using timber but there is no existing program that ensures these trees are harvested sustainably. Without addressing these issues, the fight against deforestation will remain a pipeline dream and the huge budgets allocated to plant trees will remain un-impactful.

To address these issues, Olamyara Tilil (OT) is targeting to do the first ever full recovery of 500 acres (202 hectares) of land in Nanyuki representing a community of 125 homesteads. The success and lessons from this program will be replicated across the country and continent to offer a home grown solution to the desertification problem. Before planting a tree, we are working to eliminate factors that affect their survival with the following solutions. Energy- introduce biogas solutions for homesteads to utilizes biomass readily available to the community and reduce by at least 70% demand for firewood/charcoal for cooking purposes Drill boreholes and create small community based dams to retain rain waters to recharge the water table as well as introduce drip irrigation to farming. Build community based cooperative societies that enable the community to enjoy benefits of scales through input purchases and marketing their produces Start a sustainable tree harvesting program through dedication of 40acres to farm fast growing trees for construction needs. Increase tree cover at homestead level and in protected forest areas. Metrocart ltd is looking for partners to walk with in this journey and be part of a solution that will impact hundreds of lives permanently and form a study for home based solutions to be replicated elsewhere.

Our Mission

We are steadfast in our commitment to forge sustainable solutions for rural communities, addressing the root causes of environmental degradation. Our mission is centered on implementing climate-responsive energy alternatives, fostering sustainable economic activities, and promoting tree harvesting that sustains biodiversity while continuously regeneration it. Through these initiatives, we aim to usher in a sustainable era while adopting communities to the realities of climate change.

Our Vision

To nurture a thriving, self-sustaining communities where the delicate equilibrium between human needs and environmental conservation is gracefully maintained. Envisioning transformed landscapes and empowered individuals, we strive to create a ripple effect of positive change that transcends communities. Through pioneering initiatives in energy alternatives, water conservation, community empowerment, and sustainable tree harvesting, our aim is to establish a resilient and replicable model. We aspire to inspire a greener, healthier future for all.

Causes

We are a non-profital organisation working towards empowering communities in the rural areas of the country to be part of the solution towards fighting back desertification.

Reforestation

Trees save energy through cooling in the hotter months, and provide a windbreak during winter. This results in burning of less fossil fuels to generate electricity for cooling and heating.

Renewable energy

Biogas is considered to be a renewable resource because is production-and-use cycle is continous.

Better standards of living

A renewable source of energy will raise the standards of living by making life simple when it regrows in a continually repeating cycle.

Earth Stewardship

Forests and biodiversity

Forests and biodiversity are vital for sustaining the planet's health and supporting plant and animal species.

Climate justice and energy

Urgent action is needed to achieve climate justice and equitable access to clean energy sources.

Food sovereignty

Food sovereignty empowers communities to control their food systems and access healthy, culturally appropriate food.
